Pulp Smoothie

Creating this pulp smoothie was a matter of informed experimenting. Frozen fruit adds a wonderful thickness to smoothie recipes, and I figured frozen pulp would be the same concept. Fortunately for us, it is! And since making pulp smoothies, I honestly can’t see why anyone would waste their juice pulp.  All you have to do is freeze your pulp and it’ll whip up into an excellent smoothie, packed with nutrients! With this recipe, you’ll never throw out your pulp again!

Yield 1 large smoothie

  • 1/2-3/4 cup frozen pulp
  • 1/2 cup yogurt
  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1 cup juice (preferably something freshly made and complementary to the pulp you’re using or something a bit plain — when in doubt use apple)

  1. Blend all ingredients in a blender.
  2. Enjoy!

Using pulp in smoothies is seriously amazing. Sometimes pulp is absolutely the easiest (and best!) thing to add to a recipe; putting it into smoothies is a great example. Of course fruit pulp tastes amazing, but veg pulps work great too because the sweetness of the banana offsets any bitterness (add an extra banana or some dates if you have a really earthy pulp). Since I’ve been using fruit pulp primarily in dessert recipes, I’m relieved the pulp can be used in something healthier. If you want more information on freezing pulp check out this website. Apparently, you can use regular plastic containers (like cream cheese tubs) as long as you use the contents within two weeks. Ignore the bit about making freezer packs, pulp is best frozen without additives.
